Long ago, I would stress before each business trip. I’d smirk, gripe and grumble about the food I knew I’d “have” to eat and how I’d never be able to get in a good workout. Not surprisingly, this would prove true in a continual self-fulfilling prophesy. I felt trapped and subjected to whatever whim – with no time to workout, much less to think to myself.

I’d float through each trip on auto-pilot, not much minding or noticing others. I was on a mission: Get to the meetings, do my thing, and get the heck home! Of course, there was occasion to explore local interests, time allowing. But mostly I would breeze in and out. 

With extra pounds mounting, one too many lethargic trips ‘going through the motions’, and one too many “dinners” from the mini bar, I ‘woke up’ and decided to flip my perspective and approach. Why would I treat my body this way? What if I could more enjoy each step along the way? I knew the best was out there – why not set myself up each time to have the best chance at enjoying it?!

The profound truth for us travelers, is that ‘home’ is where we are in the moment. The constant companion that is our body depends on – yay begs us for – nourishment. What we put into our bodies and our minds shape our lives. Because this is our life.. on the road, on the go. And if we can’t be present for our life – for what can we be present? 

I started looking to enjoy the moments of travel – even those trying, teaching moments of delays and difficult people. Air delays became opportunities to walk more, talk more and learn more. Despite having lounge access, I’d opt to walk the airports to explore and find the best of each terminal. Each trip became of a treasure hunt of sorts. 

I researched and booked wonderful, delicious and healthy dinners across countless cities for myself and colleagues or business guests. I found boutique gyms or outdoor fitness spots and often identified a travel or local exercise companion. 

I realize not everyone can follow suit with this special sort of ‘healthy gluttony’, and this is precisely why Healthy Anywhere exists, to empower you to be your best and enjoy the best.

And still… some days, after little sleep and long meetings, the last inclination we have is to be kind to the airport worker or to take a walk around the terminal. Our favorite wine bar or healthy vice beckons… But general awareness and anticipation goes a long way in facilitating healthier travel. Healthier” in how we treat our bodies, our minds, and each other. 

A few quick tips in anticipating healthy travel: 

  1. Be strategic with hotel, dining and fitness selection. As practical as possible, identify a hotel that meets these criteria: 
    • 15-20 minutes walking distance from your meetings
    • Near your favorite type of gym or fitness activity (walk/run path)
    • Walking distance to excellent restaurants.
  2. Plan to make time for yourself while traveling.
    • For morning or day meetings with a long flight, consider flying in the day or early evening prior, for chances at a good night’s sleep.
    • Aim to walk as much as possible, even in the cold, rain, etc. Walking before and after meetings calms any nerves, while simultaneously energizing our bodies and stimulating creativity. Always be safe – and bring necessary gear and shoes to change as needed. I found superb all-weather dress boots that have walked all over Chicago, in the rain and snow. 
  3. Look forward to enjoying what is special about where you are going. Every place has something unique and interesting. Identify and enjoy it – or at least enjoy learning about it, and have something interesting to discuss with the locals. 
  4. KNOW before you GO:
    • The best restaurants that are healthy per your definition, AND delicious. (Seek input from local and expert food critics) 
    • The best places to workout 
    • Safe and scenic spots to walk
