It all was so perfect: the “always local”, “mostly organic” greens.. the superfoods salad – including power-packed nutritional yeast (yum and YES!) – the grass-fed meats and pastured poultry burgers… But then I asked one question that changed everything.
This question was: “what oils do you use, for cooking and for your salad dressings?” And the answer was astonishing, considering the attention to healthy detail otherwise.
The answer: “for cooking, we use soybean oil. For dressings, we use canola oil.” Holding out hope, I asked if these oils were confirmed either Organic or Non-GMO. And the manager apologetically confirmed that the oils were neither. She admitted and acknowledged the irony and deficit.
And with that, the tyranny of the unhealthy healthy strikes again! Sometimes I wish I did not know…
The moral of the story is, always ask. Know what is in your food and be empowered to make educated decisions.
