Our 2023 report. Onward 2024!
Over the holidays – as every year – we paused to take stock of our massive progress over the past year.
Given minimal FTEs and resources – intentionally constrained by self-funding – the results are staggering.
Below is a recap.
1. Front-end app: "Healthy Anywhere"
- Late 2022: A part-time front-end developer joined our team. Our Beta mobile app launched on December 27, 2022, to existing web app members ( Santa forgot one last gift 🙂 )
- Jan – Aug 2023: Perhaps the world’s longest Beta Program!
- Deployed over 100 releases and iterations throughout these 8 months.
- Flew well past MVP as soon as March
- New changes from Apple – and initial confusion with the review process – threw us for a loop, but we figured it out. Always. Learning.
- Beautiful app artwork was added by a talented Ukrainian designer, Olena.
- 🌟 Sept 2023: Launched “Healthy Anywhere” app on Apple Store + Android Beta! 🌟
2. Back-end Data ingestion and curation platform
- Curated and added over 1,000 top healthy spots to our app, featuring 21+ new key cities.
- Added for future evaluation: over 20,000 new restaurants/markets (IE newly opened, tips from chefs, food writers, friends, finds, etc)
- Initiated our standard deep evaluation for over 23,000 restaurants
- Several new APIs, data sources, and expert sources were incorporated.
(When trusted sources talk about how great any food place is… we run it through our standard process to evaluate just ‘how healthy’, ‘how sustainable’, and ‘how delicious’? )
3. Team / Organization
- Designed and Implemented (3) new internal workflow tools to empower future staff.
- Deployed training program and video repository.
- Confirmed new Interns for 2024 (1 part-time plus 3-4 for a project Jan – May)
- Input from key advisors, including D2C CEOs who’ve scaled to multiple nine-figures and a renowned expert in Academia, entrepreneurship and sustainable food systems, VC, and more.
4. New Programs
- Implemented affiliate system and program. Ready for 2024
- Corporate client offering ready for 2024
5. Learnings
- Slow down to speed up. Need to design and implement our system for driving more efficient, rapid scale to new locations. More hands are required (and coming soon).
- Extreme constraints can yield impressive innovation and results – or cause brute force burnout.
- With extreme constraints of resources – each team member must clearly understand their essential tasks and priorities. Escalate or ignore the rest!
- We’ve learned a lot after deeply evaluating tens of thousands of restaurants! Will document the highlights in a separate blog post.
Game On, 2024.
Our key priorities this year are growing both our membership and nationwide app coverage. We can’t grow without our members – our oxygen and reason for being!
We’ve dedicated a Q1-Q2 project to augment our data platform for more efficient and rapid location expansion.
